Why is the event being run?
Epee was lacking a National Championships at the under 12 age-group as both Foil and Sabre hold such an event. At the last two Surrey County Youth Championships Under 12 Epee had more entries than any other event. This age-group for Epee is booming with several coaches in Surrey coaching primary and prep schools and Epee is quickly becoming the weapon of choice for juniors learning to fence. I alone coach over 100 fencers in this age-group so nationwide there must be a huge number of possible competitors.
As a young fencer I fenced at the Under 12 National Foil Championships in Bath over 20 years ago which helped hook me into fencing for the long term, now as Senior National Champion, I have an opportunity to give young fencers the chance of competing on a national stage, which hopefully will also encourage even more of them to keep fencing into adulthood.
